The pediatric rheumatology fellowship training program at Schneider Children's Hospital, one of only 21 ACGME accredited programs in the United States, is designated the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center Program. The program is three years in duration, preparing the trainee for American Board of Pediatrics, Rheumatology Sub-board certification, and a career in academic pediatric rheumatology. There are three full time faculty in pediatric rheumatology: Norman Ilowite MD (program director), Beth Gottlieb MD, and Anne Eberhard, MD. Trainees have precepted inpatient and outpatient responsibilities at two tertiary care medical centers: Schneider Children's Hospital, and Schneider Children's Hospital at North Shore. Increasing supervisory and educational responsibility over the three years, as well as more protected time in research, is built into the program. Didactic teaching in basic immunology, autoimmunity, connective tissue biology, and in the clinical subjects of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, scleroderma, vasculitis, and pain syndromes occurs on a regular basis. There is a special curriculum in research methods and ethics. The research interests of the faculty include, disease outcome studies, atherosclerosis prevention, pain assessment and treatment, treatment of lupus and novel therapies (including biologic) in the pediatric rheumatic disease. Trainees are also given the opportunity to work in a number of basic laboratories with interests in autoimmunity and immunogenetics. There is a requirement for completion of a hypothesis-driven, clinical or basic research project. Interested candidates should apply 18 months prior to the July 1st start date. Decisions regarding candidates are usually made approximately 3 months later. For more information contact Dr. Norman Ilowite via email at Ilowite@lij.edu.
