Pediatric Trauma Care in New York State
Unintentional injuries continue to be the leading cause of death
to children greater than one year of age in the United States.
Pediatric Trauma Centers are dedicated to the care of injured
children combined with public and professional injury prevention
education. They bring together the unique expertise of a pediatric
hospital's staff and services to treat a wide variety of childhood
injuries. Within the Pediatric Trauma Center, a pediatric surgeon
working together with the multi- specialty hospital team leads
the care of an injured child. Children may enter the hospital
system via the Pediatric Emergency Department or by transfer from
their local hospital.
Special
resources are required when caring for an injured child. Centers
must be specially equipped to manage airways, vascular access,
fluid administration needs, and drug therapy requirements of children.
The scope of pediatric care encompasses many phases from prehospital
through acute care and rehabilitation. Along with providing comprehensive
pediatric specialty services, Pediatric Trauma Centers are committed
to pediatric trauma research, education and injury prevention
activities. They serve as regional resources to their communities
in the treatment of injured children and as a leader in injury
prevention activities.

Scope of the Problem
Statistics show that more children die from unintentional injuries
each year than all other leading causes of childhood death combined.
Motor vehicle/traffic related deaths continue to be the leading
cause of injury related deaths in children both in New York and
across the United States
