The Division of Pediatric Surgery at Schneider Children's Hospital
deals with a full range of surgical procedures required in children
and focuses on the unique physiology and anatomy of the young
patient. A need is recognized, and a comprehensive approach focusing
on it is utilized. Close cooperation with the patients referring
physician is maintained at all times.
The
"Same Day Surgery Unit" permits children to undergo treatment
for many surgical problems without the necessity of an overnight
stay in the hospital. This spares the child the trauma of hospitalization
and permits convalescence at home. An educational visit several
days prior to the scheduled procedure allows the child and parents
a chance to become familiar with the facility and to learn what
to expect on the big day. While in the hospital, parents are allowed
to be with their child as much as possible. One parent is almost
always allowed to be present in the operating room while their
child is going to sleep. After surgery, children are brought to
the pediatric recovery room and parents are allowed to see them
shortly after their arrival. After recovery, children are discharged
and are almost always home by the afternoon.
For
patients requiring hospitalization overnight and longer, every
effort is made to make the child as comfortable as possible. One
parent is encouraged to sleep in with the child.
For those patients from out of town or from foreign countries
we offer the convenience of the Ronald McDonald House, which is
a home away from home, where the families of an ill child can
stay at a minimal expense and at walking distance from the Children's
Hospital.
The Division of Pediatric Surgery has a special interest and
enormous experience in the treatment and research of colorectal
problems and has become an International Referral Center for the
Treatment of Colorectal problems in children. These disorders
are treated by a full group of professionals as a team.
The Division of Pediatric Surgery also specializes in Neonatal
Surgery, the correction and treatment of newborn congenital anomalies,
Pediatric Oncologic Surgery, the surgical treatment of Pediatric
Gastrointestinal Diseases, and the cases of the traumatically
injured child.
Pediatric
surgeons at Schneider Children's Hospital are providing the most
advanced minimally invasive surgery techniques available for infants,
children and adolescents. Laproscopic and throascoscopic surgery
benefits children by decreasing post-operative pain and complications,
creating very small incisions with little or not scarring, and
providing a faster recovery time, and a shorter stay in the hospital.
Schneider Children's Hospital is an approved Level I Pediatric
Trauma Center and a team approach to the care of the injured
child is utilized. Members from many pediatric sub-specialties
including, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric
Anesthesiology, and Pediatric Critical Care. All work in concert
to manage these sometimes critically ill children.
