OVERVIEW
The
Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine provides one of the largest
and most advanced newborn intensive care services in the United
States. With two regional neonatal centers located minutes from
each other at Schneider Children's Hospital and Schneider Children's
Hospital at North Shore University Hospital, as well as nine affiliated
hospitals in Staten Island, Queens and Long Island, our division
has the responsibility of caring for almost 27,000 newborns a
year - ten percent of all infants born annually in New York State!
Therefore, we have highly experienced neonatologists who rotate
periodically between each of the system hospitals and employ a
common standard of best practices. A dedicated, specialized, neonatal
transport team is available around the clock to bring newborns
from affiliate or regional hospitals. Subspecialists in all fields
of pediatrics, such as pediatric cardiovascular and general surgery,
neurology, and cardiology, are readily available at the Children's
Hospital Centers.
The mission of our division is to provide outstanding, compassionate care of the newborn, as well as teaching and research, all in a family-centered and developmentally supportive environment. The Department of Health from New York State has designated both Obstetrical and Neonatal Services at the two major campuses, as Regional Perinatal Centers, for referral of the most complex patient problems as well as the oversight of quality care for the newborns in our region.
