NEONATOLOGY

OVERVIEW

The Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine provides one of the largest and most advanced newborn intensive care services in the United States. The New York State Department of Health has designated both Obstetrical and Neonatal Services at the two major campuses, as Regional Perinatal Centers, for referral of the most complex patient problems as well as the oversight of quality care for the newborns in our region. Our division in the two regional neonatal centers, located minutes from each other, at Schneider Children's Hospital and Schneider Children's Hospital at North Shore University Hospital, as well as eight affiliated hospitals in Staten Island, Queens and Long Island, have the responsibility of caring for almost 25,000 newborns a year - ten percent of all infants born annually in New York State! Therefore, we have highly experienced neonatologists who rotate periodically between the two regional perinatal centers and employ a common standard of best practices utilizing evidence based medicine and enhanced patient safety protocols. A dedicated, specialized, neonatal transport team is available around the clock to serve newborns throughout our region. Subspecialists in all fields of pediatric medical and surgical care, such as pediatric cardiovascular and general surgery, neurology, and cardiology, are readily available at the Children's Hospital Centers (Find Specialists). Our hospital hosts a broad range of subspecialty fellowships which enhance the progressive, cutting-edge nature of our practice.

The mission of our division is to provide outstanding, compassionate care of the newborn, as well as teaching and research, all in a family-centered and developmentally supportive environment.

December 2008 marked the opening of our modern new 24 bed expansion with additional areas to enhance a family centered environment. Our health system has broken ground on a state-of-the-art expansion of our Women's center. The LIJ center, due to open in 2011, includes a Neonatal Stabilization Unit bringing state-of-the-art intensive care with a baby's first breath.
