HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY and STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION (Bone Marrow Transplant)

Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell (Bone Marrow) Transplantation are fields of pediatric medicine that deal with cancer as well as the acquired and genetic diseases of the blood that afflict infants, children, adolescents and young adults.

The Division is dedicated to the mission of excellent patient care, research and training. The clinical goal is accomplished in the context of the facilities of the entire Department of Pediatrics at Schneider Children's Hospital. Our close collaboration with other pediatric specialists, psychologists, social workers, child life specialists and dedicated pediatric support services insures the highest quality of care. The Division utilizes in-house treatment and research programs as well as national collaborative group studies such as those of the Children's Oncology Group (COG), the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), and others. We are an HHS-funded Comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment Center and an NIH funded Comprehensive Sickle Cell Program (Albert Einstein College of Medicine). These efforts combine state of the art treatment with advanced research protocols to ensure superb patient care and clinical research. Our laboratory research is performed in our endowed research laboratories and through local, national and international collaborations. Our teaching efforts are directed towards the training of medical students through classroom lectures, seminars, electives and third and fourth year student rotations; pediatric house officers on inpatient and outpatient rotations and electives, and fellows through our comprehensive Sub-Board Approved Training Program. The attending staff serves on the full time faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Our philosophy is that all three components of our program: excellent clinical care, teaching and clinical and laboratory research are inexorably linked and that each is necessary to provide the most accurate diagnosis and most successful treatment programs for current and future patients.

The Division provides ambulatory care services in the form of office hours and the day hospital on a daily basis. Appointments are scheduled or on an emergent basis. Members of the Division are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for consultations and emergencies.
