BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT

Bone Marrow Transplant (Stem Cell) Program

Established in late 80's, The Gambino Medical and Science Foundation Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit at Schneider Children's has been recently renovated.
The goal of the transplant team is to provide state of the art Blood and Marrow Stem Cell transplantation to our current patients and through research improve the results of transplantation for future patients.

Among the diseases for which bone marrow (stem cell) transplantation has been curative are: acute and chronic leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), severe aplastic anemia, inherited bone marrow failure syndromes such as Diamond Blackfan anemia, Shwachman Diamond syndrome, Fanconi anemia and others, selected patients with Sickle cell anemia, Thalassemia, Immunodeficiency disorders such as severe combined immunodeficiency and Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, lysosomal and other metabolic storage diseases, histiocytic disorders and certain solid tumors including brain tumor, neuroblastoma and Wilms tumor etc. Our unit has transplanted patients with virtually all these disease types.

We perform autologous and allogeneic matched related and unrelated peripheral blood, marrow and cord blood stem cell transplants. We have become one of the most active pediatric-exclusive stem cell transplantation units in the country. Our outcomes are comparable to the best units in the world.
The program remains at the forefront of transplantation research and technology through IRB approved internally initiated studies and research and affiliations with organizations including National Marrow Donor Program, Blood and Clinical trial network and Children's Oncology Group.

In addition, Schneider Children's stem cell transplantation program has also incorporated a transplant survivorship clinic which provides services to address the unique needs of the survivors in the years following treatment. This program and a follow up multidisciplinary clinic for stem cell transplant patients is staffed by endocrinologist, cardiologist, psychologist, neuro-psychologist, nutritionist and a social worker. We also have special program to ease patients' transition to post transplant life which addresses their education needs through school liaison program where our social worker and a child psychologist visit the school prior to the school entry or re-entry.

The transplant unit has been accredited by:
Foundation for the Accreditation of Cell Therapy, FACT
The National Marrow Donor Program, NMDP
The Children's Oncology Group, COG
