ADOLESCENT MEDICINE

The Division of Adolescent Medicine consists of an 18-bed inpatient unit as well as ambulatory and satellite programs tailored to the unique medial and developmental needs of teenagers and young adults. Confidential help with personal health and emotional concerns is provided. Teams of healthcare specialists work in a variety of programs:

Eating Disorders - In-patient, out-patient and day hospital programs are provided for children, adolescents and young adults with eating disorders.

Hyperlipidemia and Weight Management - Children and adolescents with elevated cholesterol or triglyceride levels, as well as those overweight or obese, are evaluated and treated by a staff that provides specialized diets, counseling, and medications for patients and families.

Adolescent Gynecology - A full range of adolescent gynecologic issues, including menstrual disorders (irregular, painful or excessive periods) and sexuality related concerns (contraception, pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases) are evaluated and treated.

Deaf Health Services - Primary care and specialized services are available for deaf teenagers.

General Health Care - The division provides general care (check-ups, acute care and chronic illness) for adolescent's ages 12-21 years. Specialized physicians along with nurses, nutritionists and social workers are available as needed to provide this care.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - Comprehensive medical and psychosocial evaluation and management is provided to children and adolescents with this complicated disorder.

Behavioral Health - Treatment for Adolescents with bio-behavioral problems (such as drug abuse, attention deficit disorder, non-compliance with chronic illness care, depression/suicidal idealation). Evaluation, counseling, and coordination with mental health services are provided.

HIV Prevention Services - A High-Risk Youth Program offering HIV education, counseling and testing is available. Medical and psychosocial care for HIV-positive youths is coordinated with the Allergy/Immunology Division.

School Based Health Services - The staff serves as school physicians for ten high schools in two Nassau County School districts and leads a team of nurse practitioners and psychosocial/nutrition specialists in three comprehensive high school and middle school health centers in Queens.
