Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD):

The entire division has bountiful experience in treating children with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (IBD) from infancy to early adulthood. Our goals are to ensure that children with inflammatory bowel disease live as normal a life as possible and to maximize their growth potential. We strive to educate our patients and their families so that they understand the disease process and take a proactive role in their care.

Dr. Levine has been the Chairman of the Long Island Chapter of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation (CCFA) for the last 9 years.

Dr. Markowitz is known worldwide for his research in IBD and has presented his findings at many national and international conferences. He currently has many ongoing clinical research projects in IBD, working with Kathy Granger, the research coordinator with a primary interest in inflammatory bowel disease.

Dr. Daum is an acknowledged expert in the field of inflammatory bowel disease with multiple published articles. He was previously the Director of the IBD Center at North Shore University Hospital.

Dr. Iofel has been interested in metabolic bone disease in patients with IBD.

Drs. Pettei, Weinstein, Gold, Haller, and Hample all have tremendous experience and interest in caring for patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Collectively, the group cares for greater than 600 children that suffer from inflammatory bowel disease, making Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center one of the largest centers for pediatric IBD in the nation do.

Pediatric Liver Disease:

In a unique partnership, we are working in close conjunction with the Division of Hepatology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine with monthly meetings regarding children with specific liver disorders. This partnership includes care of the child status post liver transplant as well as other chronic liver disorders, such as biliary atresia, cirrhosis of various etiologies, autoimmune hepatitis, and sclerosing cholangitis.

Geraldine Cavalluzzi is the clinical coordinator of patients with liver disease and Dr. Levine supervises the clinical research program together with Dr. Benjamin Shneider at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Diagnostic Procedures:

  1. liver biopsy
  2. liver transplantation (at Mt. Sinai Hospital)

Functional Intestinal Disorders:

Functional bowel disorders including constipation, infantile gastroesophageal reflux, and irritable bowel syndrome form the most common reasons for children to seek attention from a pediatric gastroenterologist. All members of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology have abundant experience in diagnosing and managing children with functional bowel disorders. In addition to using the latest therapies and techniques in treating children with these conditions, we also seek to educate the patient and family regarding the basis of these problems.
