NEONATOLOGY

Regional Perinatal Centers/Outreach

The best care for the newborn starts with excellent prenatal care of the mother. The New York State Department of Health has designated the maternal-fetal medicine and neonatology services at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, as separate regional perinatal centers (RPCs). Each center serves as a leader in helping to establish the best practices of care for all affiliated hospitals in the NS-LIJ Health System. The center also provides physician and nursing education, highly specialized referral options, and cutting-edge research for new therapies. The regional perinatal centers and affiliated hospitals set guidelines for transferring babies from their hospital of birth to the RPC for specialized care.

The RPC at North Shore University Hospital is responsible for Huntington Hospital, Southside Hospital, Glen Cove Hospital, Plainview Hospital, Franklin Hospital, and Forest Hills Hospital. The RPC at Long Island Jewish Medical Center is responsible for St. John's Episcopal Hospital, Nassau University Hospital Center, Staten Island University Hospital and Victory Memorial Hospital.

For prenatal referrals for example, fetuses who have been identified with genetic or anatomical problems, likelihood of delivering very prematurely; or for mothers with serious obstetrical conditions that may affect the baby. Sometimes it is better to transfer the mother to the regional perinatal center before she delivers, rather than risk tranport of an extremely ill newborn after birth. see "How to Reach Us".
