Fellowship
Training/Education
The
fully accredited fellowship program of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine
is located at two New York State designated regional perinatal
centers, SCH at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and SCH at North
Shore University Hospital (5 minutes apart by car). We have 11,000
inborn patients at the two major centers and 25,000 deliveries
in the hospital system (1/10 of NYS deliveries). We are cutting
edge with ECMO, high-tech respiratory support, transport with
iNO and high frequency ventilation, selective brain-cooling therapy
for hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, and extensive cardiology
and cardiovascular surgical services. By contrast, we are also
family-oriented NICUs. We are located on the eastern border of
New York City, making it a highly attractive location for family,
recreation, education and culture.
Our mission is to provide compassionate, outstanding care,
combined
with teaching and cutting-edge research. The NICU's of the two
regional perinatal centers have 44 and 52 beds. Our expanding
staff currently has 11 neonatologists, 11 fellows, 1 pediatric
nurse practitioner, 4 neonatal nurse practitioners, 4 clinical
nurse specialists, and 2 research scientists. There are 11 maternal-fetal
medicine specialists. Fellow night call is in-house. The neonatology
division has outstanding marks for teaching. There are regular
academic meetings in neonatology and perinatology. Additional
experience is offered in pediatric cardiology and neurodevelopmental
follow-up. All fellows finish either a clinical or basic research
project mentored by one of the neonatal attendings or our research
scientists.
Areas
of research interest include the molecular biology of inflammation
in BPD, inhaled nitric oxide, developmental cardiology, neonatal
respiratory mechanics, pharmacology and neonatal nutrition. We
believe in evidence-based medicine and are participating in major
clinical trials (e.g. Human milk-based nutritional study; High
Frequency Jet Ventilation to decrease bronchopulmonary dysplasia;
Novel antifungal therapy phase 3 trials). There is a basic research
neonatal laboratory at each regional perinatal center.
Applicants
are strongly encouraged to apply early. Interviews are usually
given about 1½ years before the start date of July 1st.
