NEONATOLOGY

Why Choose Us?

Schneider Children's Hospital and its neonatal services have been recognized as a leading center for child health care in the country. Besides caring for 10% of New York State's newborns within North Shore - Long Island Jewish Health Care System hospitals, we receive referrals from the entire New York City metropolitan area, Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut and beyond. We also receive "gift of life" patients from throughout the world. Besides a great depth of experience, our neonatologists have diverse interests and expertise that has brought them national reputations for outstanding care and teaching. In addition, we are constantly involved in laboratory and clinical research to help find better ways to deliver health care. Our interaction with the family often begins far before the time of birth, in collaboration with an outstanding high-risk obstetrical service. Our nursing staff has won the coveted Magnet Award for excellence in nursing care. Finally, we are devoted to family-centered care, which enhances family comfort and participation in the care of their newborn.

Many of our special neonatal programs are unique to our area. These include: an advanced transport system for bringing babies to our two major centers, a lung rescue and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program for the most extremely severe lung disorders, extensive cardiology and cardiovascular surgery services, a brain cooling pilot program to prevent certain types of cerebral palsy, and a center for neonatal nutrition which plays an important role in a baby's long-term outcome, including intelligence, as well. We take pride in being at the cutting edge of new therapy for our patients and have pediatric subspecialists available in every field at Schneider Children's Hospital campuses.

Our units are staffed with family support professionals from our social service departments, child life department, and the Tender Loving Care Foundation (a support and philanthropic organization led by parents of our NICU graduates). A Ronald McDonald House and other stay-over facilities for parents are immediately adjacent to the two main campuses.
