The Comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment Center
The Long Island Jewish Comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC) is the Federally designated regional hemophilia program for Long Island. The Center, directed by Richard Lipton, M.D., M.P.H., provides comprehensive multidisciplinary services to over 100 children and their families with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease and related bleeding disorders. The LIJ HTC also serves as a secondary and tertiary facility for consultation and surgery services to patients from other metropolitan area medical hospitals. Clinical services include a diagnostic coagulation laboratory, emergency facilities, in-patient services, hematology, orthopedic, dental and oral surgery coverage and efficient utilization of the hospital blood bank. HTC staffing includes two hematologists (one pediatric, one adult), an orthopedist, two nurse clinicians, genetic counselor, social worker, physical therapist, and a dental hygienist.
Administrative space for the HTC is provided within the Oncology Institute at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Facilities include a waiting area, examination rooms, conference room, offices and an administrative area. Comprehensive evaluations are performed on Tuesdays and Thursdays, walk in visits with acute medical problems are accommodated Monday - Friday. An ongoing home care program assures that hospital visits by center patients are kept to a minimum. Through its participation in the Hemophilia Consortium Inc, the LIJ HTC offers its patients the lowest possible prices for clotting factor concentrate, choice of all licensed products, home distribution and medical waste disposal and educational programs and scientific panels for patients, families, physicians and third party payers.
