HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY and STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION (Bone Marrow Transplant)

Children's Cancer Center

The Children's Cancer Center at Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center diagnoses and treats newborns, children, adolescents and young adults with cancer. Our center is one of the largest programs of its kind in the New York metropolitan area. Nationally and internationally recognized pediatric oncologists with expertise in treating pediatric leukemia, sarcomas, neuroblastoma, bone tumors, Wilms tumors and other rare tumors of childhood staff the Center.

The Center is an active member of the Children's Oncology Group, providing families with National Cancer Institute sponsored clinical trials in pediatric cancer. This enables us to provide state of the art therapy to our pediatric cancer patients. Therapy is administered in the new 14 bed state of the art ambulatory outpatient chemotherapy and transfusion unit or the dedicated 21 bed inpatient pediatric hematology/Oncology unit at Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center. Support staff includes pediatric nurses, social workers, psychologists and child life specialists specifically equipped to deal with children and families of children with cancer.

The multidisciplinary team includes pediatric surgeons with expertise in open and laparoscopic pediatric cancer surgery, pediatric pathologists and radiation oncologists with expertise in pediatric radiation therapy. All new cases are discussed in a weekly multidisciplinary tumor board consisting of pediatric oncologists, pediatric surgeons, pediatric radiologists, pediatric pathologists and pediatric radiation therapists. Our pediatric acute leukemia/lymphoma program is the largest and most experienced on Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens. Pediatric solid tumor programs for childhood renal tumors, neuroblastoma, sarcoma, bone tumors, germ cell and liver tumors allows us to provide cutting edge interdisciplinary care to these children. The effort to cure pediatric tumors is supported by our state of the art pediatric bone marrow transplantation program. Pediatric brain tumors are treated in the Pediatric Brain and Spinal Cord Tumor Program by dedicated pediatric neuron-oncologists, pediatric neurologists, and pediatric neurosurgeons and support staff. Pediatric bone tumors are treated by a multidisciplinary team of pediatric oncologists and pediatric orthopedic surgeons specializing in orthopedic oncology surgery.

A monthly bone tumor conference enables the team to discuss and review all pediatric bone tumor patients. Pediatric neuroblastomas are treated by a specialized team of pediatric oncologists, pediatric surgeons, pediatric bone marrow transplant physicians and radiation therapists all with specific expertise in neuroblastoma therapy. The Center for Survivors of Childhood Cancer meets the complex needs of the pediatric cancer survivors. The center provides coordinated access to oncology, cardiology, endocrinology, pulmonary, psychology, neuropsychological and nutrition services for our large and increasing population of childhood cancer survivors.
