Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical
Center
Steven
and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park is a
154-bed hospital which opened in 1983 as the New York metropolitan area's
only hospital designed exclusively for children as a regional, tertiary
care children's hospital. Residents spend ninety percent of their training
time at this institution.
Complementing the principal teaching hospital, Steven and Alexandra
Cohen Children's Medical Center at North Shore University Hospital in
Manhasset has 70 pediatric beds devoted to the general medical and intensive
care needs of children of all ages, and another large state-of-the-art
neonatal unit. SCH faculty and fellows cover all the patients at both
hospitals. Residents will rotate to this institution for approximately
5 months during their training.
South Nassau Community Hospital is located in Oceanside. It has a modest
pediatric floor, a level two NICU and a pediatric emergency department.
Senior residents may spend up to a month at South Nassau.
The combined Children's Hospital resources provide comprehensive medical,
surgical, dental and psychiatric care. The Steven and Alexandra Cohen
Children's Medical Centers function as community hospitals for local
patients, while fulfilling their role as tertiary referral centers.
A staff of specialists in all the major clinical areas includes a large
full-time faculty of more than 150 general pediatricians and pediatric
subspecialists, surgeons and surgical subspecialists, psychiatrists,
dentists, nurse practitioners, psychologists, social workers, rehabilitation
therapists, pharmacists and other health professionals and technical
personnel. Our voluntary staff of more than 400 pediatricians also play
a significant role in preparing our residents for the hospital and office
responsibilities of the general pediatrician.
In addition, the Fellows in our 13 pediatric Fellowships complement
the Faculty's clinical and academic relations with the residents. Finally,
our residents actively participate in the training of the third and
fourth-year medical students in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
