Department Structure
For almost half a century, the Pediatric Residency Program at Schneider Children's Hospital (SCH) has been recognized as a premier teaching program for pediatric residents and fellows. A little over a mile away is North Shore University Hospital with a renowned pediatric residency program which has been a leader for decades in the field of pediatric education. The decision to bring these two outstanding programs together in 2003 under Schneider Children's Hospital auspies was made to enhance the opportunities for residents' training and to further improve their pediatric education.
Schneider Children's Hospital in New Hyde Park is a 154-bed hospital
which opened in 1983 as the New York Metropolitan area's only hospital
designed exclusively for children as a regional, tertiary care children's
hospital. Schneider Children's Hospital at North Shore in Manhasset
has 70 pediatric beds, devoted to the medical and intensive care needs
of children of all ages. The combined Children's Hospital is a resource
that provides comprehensive medical, surgical, dental and psychiatric
care. Schneider Children's Hospitals function as community hospitals
for local patients, while fulfilling its role as a tertiary referral
center. A staff of specialists in all the major clinical areas includes
a large full-time faculty of more than 150 pediatricians and pediatric
subspecialists, surgeons and surgical subspecialists, psychiatrists,
dentists, nurse practitioners, psychologists, social workers, rehabilitation
therapists, pharmacists and other health professionals and technical
personnel. Our voluntary staff of more than 400 pediatricians also play
a role in the education of our residents.
Schneider Children's Hospital is a cornerstone of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. The System is a comprehensive network of hospitals, nursing homes and ambulatory facilities in six counties. The Children's Hospital is the Long Island Campus for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and New York University School of Medicine. Our residents actively participate in the training of third and fourth-year medical students in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
SCH is a leading regional resource providing specialized health services
for acutely and chronically sick newborns, children and adolescents
in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Outpatient services are available
at Schneider Children's Hospital's main campuses in New Hyde Park and
Manhasset and at regional Consultation Centers in Flushing, Commack,
Hewlett, West Islip, Brooklyn (Opening Fall 2003) NY and Westwood, NJ.
