Residency Program
A Day
in the Life of a Resident
7:00
- 8:30 a.m.
Inpatient Unit Teaching Rounds
Teams consisting of first-year residents, supervised by a third-year
resident, visit each team member's patients to discuss each case and
its related progress. A general pediatric attending, program director
or chief resident joins the group for teaching and discussion.
8:30
- 9:00 a.m.
Morning Report
There is daily review of recently admitted cases by the Program Directors
or senior faculty. Cases are presented by the resident who admitted
the patient. All residents and students are invited to attend. During
elective time your day starts with Morning Report.
9:00
- 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
General Pediatric Care
This time is spent with house officers on patient floors providing care
to their assigned patients. Residents work as part of a multidisciplinary
team to care for the patients on their service.
10:30
- 11:30 a.m.
Professorial and Attending Rounds
Both full-time and voluntary staff members conduct teaching and bedside
rounds three days weekly on each unit of the Children's Hospital. In
depth discussion of a differential diagnoses and management options
are the focus of resident case presentations during these rounds.
12:00-1:00
Teaching Conferences
The noon lecture series, a strong didactic component of resident education,
is composed of a mix of case conferences, lecture sessions, Board review
and journal clubs. Faculty members from general pediatrics, subspecialties
and other disciplines present topics in a variety of formats.
4:00
- 5:00 p.m.
Sign-out
Patient progress is discussed with the ward team and then signed out
to the residents on call
5:00
p.m. - 6:45 a.m.
OnCall
Residents in their first year are on-call every fourth night with responsibility
for working up admissions and providing care to patients until morning.
During the senior years there is a night float system that helps to
minimize call time and maximize elective time.
Friday
8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
Gemini Video Conferencing Program
The Gemini Video-Conferencing Program was started in 1973 as a way of
sharing interesting medical cases with General Pediatricians in the
community. Over the years, the program spread over Long Island and is
now broadcast both nationally and internationally. Residents have the
opportunity to present the history and physical findings of each case-based
discussion.

11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Grand Rounds
Grand Rounds are weekly educational programs on various topics of importance
in pediatric practice. They include presentations on current clinical
material of diagnostic and therapeutic interest.
