ALL ABOUT US

Our History

In the early 1960's, Long Island, stretching from New York City through Nassau and Suffolk counties, was rapidly changing from rural countryside and suburbia into a major population center. Parents with critically sick children often had to travel great distances for the specialized pediatric care found only at a children's hospital.

Many dedicated people were deeply involved in creating the Schneider Children's Hospital: the Long Island Jewish Center Board of Trustees, its administration, professional staff and a group of concerned parents. These parents, as well as pediatricians and health-minded civic leaders, organized the Children's Medical Fund of New York (CMFNY). Recognizing the excellence of the large Pediatric Department at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, the Children's Medical Fund joined forces with the Medial Center to work toward the goal of building a hospital for the total care of children.

It was a remarkable accomplishment to prove to federal and state authorities that there was an imperative need for this sophisticated pediatric health facility. At a time of severe government cutbacks and a freeze on hospital construction, ten year of negotiations were required to gain the necessary approvals. In November 1983, the 154-bed, Schneider Children's Hospital of Long Island Jewish Medical Center opened its doors. The generous support of Helen and Irving Schneider and their daughters Lynn and Mindy was a vital factor in achieving the new hospital. Its mission of excellence continues to be enhanced by their unflagging enthusiasm and concern.
