Beth Gottlieb, MD The pediatric rheumatology fellowship training
program at Schneider Children's Hospital, one of only 21 ACGME accredited
programs in the United States, is designated the Albert Einstein College
of Medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center Program. The program
is three years in duration, preparing the trainee for American Board
of Pediatrics, Rheumatology Sub-board certification, and a career in
academic pediatric rheumatology. There are three full time faculty in
pediatric rheumatology: Norman Ilowite MD (program director), Beth Gottlieb
MD, and Anne Eberhard, MD. Trainees have precepted inpatient and outpatient
responsibilities at two tertiary care medical centers: Schneider Children's
Hospital, and Schneider Children's Hospital at North Shore. Increasing
supervisory and educational responsibility over the three years, as
well as more protected time in research, is built into the program.
Didactic teaching in basic immunology, autoimmunity, connective tissue
biology, and in the clinical subjects of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis,
systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, scleroderma, vasculitis,
and pain syndromes occurs on a regular basis. There is a special curriculum
in research methods and ethics. The research interests of the faculty
include, disease outcome studies, atherosclerosis prevention, pain assessment
and treatment, treatment of lupus and novel therapies (including biologic)
in the pediatric rheumatic disease. Trainees are also given the opportunity
to work in a number of basic laboratories with interests in autoimmunity
and immunogenetics. There is a requirement for completion of a hypothesis-driven,
clinical or basic research project. Interested candidates should apply
18 months prior to the July 1st start date. Decisions regarding candidates
